Actually, the Monarchy do have some power. The Queen has the option to veto a proposed law from the House of Commons and the House of Lords.
Ants is right, people are wasting their voices by protesting for a cause that are destined to fail. The May Day parades are the epitome of left-wing stupidity and AnArChY crazed school kid ideas. Do they really believe that one more smashed McDonalds window will be the end of capitalism?
These radical left-wing nuts are clearly giving a bad name to whatever half decent left-wing parties there are. The pathetic left-wing protests are choking the voices of any sensible left-wingers. They should just step back and let people who know what they are talking about do the talking.

Katie,
The proportional representation in the German Reichstag of which you speak wasn't governed by a cross party approved constitution which made it easy for the Nazis to take control in the way they did. I'm sure that any written and legally binding constitution would be properly compiled to ensure that further amendment was unlikely, but I believe that it would still have to be open to scrutiny in the future to reflect huge changes in society. Just imagine if we implemented a written constitution during Victorian times without the chance for amendment, women would still not have a vote and child labour would be legal as would slavery.
Ants,
Your whole tone is one of apathy and that is what I fear is the biggest problem we face today. If no-one protested then government would become complacent. Take for example how the pro-hunting lobby has managed to force the government to keep putting off the issue in the commons or how the BNP have managed to put race back on the agenda. I believe that it's the responsibility of everyone to make their voice heard through the ballot box and/or by peacful protest, whatever the issue. We could start a whole new thread on the legalisation of drugs. It is a multi-faceted issue and certainly one which shouldn't be dissmissed as a waste of time.
Pun Fire,
The monarchy's power is very weak and pretty much pointless. As far as I'm aware the Queen has never used her power of veto, and niether did at least two of her predecessors.
Ants is not right that people are wasting their voices. The trade union movement for example have been instumental, historically, in the fight for fair employment rights and groups like Amnesty International and the Anti-Sweatshop Campaign have forced many governments to assess certain human rights issues. Trivialisation of such activist groups is insulting and unfair.
I do agree that rioting on May Day is stupid and the excessive media coverage of it detracts from what the vast majority of protesters, who are peaceful, are trying to do. It's true that no-one will change the world by smashing up a McDonalds, but perhaps starting a trade union in one will be a start.
Cheers Andy.

I agree in part and would fight and support a cause that I believe in...trade unions are a good thing..and everyone needs to be in one...especially if working for an employment agency...which I feel are leeches on the arse of society.I also feel all drugs should be legalised and taxed....and the extra money can be spent on cutting down crime..hell the drug squad police can actually arrest burglars...unfortunately that will never happen.
There are so many issues that people can raise...one being scrapping laws on pornography....Im not a porn fan...but look at Japan....all fetishes and tastes are catered for openly and freely...and sexual crime and teenage pregancy are at the lowest in Japan than most places world wide.
I think the best way to change society is by having a general zero tolerence policy towards thugs and morons...the wilfully stupid should be punished and employers should make a concious effort to make sure that qualifications actually mean something.I know people who have jobs and have lied about having a levels on applications...and not been found out...that puts a mockery on all those who actually study hard.
Im not against anything, nor am I apathetic, far from it,I get so angry at society today I get headaches.....but people who fight these causes for pathetic anarchy reasons piss me off..this isnt a dig at andy or his friends..he seems to be one of the good guys..but everyone knows who I am talking about....people who think they are smashing the system by refusing to buy meals from mcdonalds...cos they fund the ira,yet will shop at asdas who are a division of walmart...who openly sell guns to retarded americans....how does that affect us you ask???The columbine shootings........the backlash on the rock crowd was severe and the media pointed their fingers at the rock crowd and said"theyre all dangerous lunatics"and can joe public tell the difference between an emo kid and a gothic?no.

So slavery would exist...women would have no vote...and we'd be able to force kids to do our work for us...
Where's the downside again?
Rob.
